Southside Virginia Community College offers a number of college-transfer programs and even more occupational-technical opportunities. The truck-driving and heavy equipment programs, for example, are the only ones offered at a community college in Virginia.
Special workforce training programs specific for area industries can be organized as needed. The average age of college students is 32, ranging from high school students to retirees.
Southside Virginia Community College has a large "dual-enrollment" program, the second-largest in the state. Randolph-Henry High School students are able to take college courses, from college faculty, earning both college and high school credit. Some of the students earn these credits as students in the Southside Governor's School, a selective program for advanced students. Others take college credit classes at the high school, and still others are enrolled in occupational-technical courses on the SVCC campus labs.

Students are also able to take distance learning courses, both through ODU and SVCC, as well as through other major colleges in Virginia. ODU and SVCC offer student support on the Daniel Campus in Keysville; VPI, UVA, and other colleges through the Southern Higher Education Center (SHEC) in South Boston. Longwood University has services for its distance education courses on the campus in Farmville as well as the SHEC.

Charlotte County Schools have the highest graduation rate in Southern Virginia region!

The "pink" coloring given to Charlotte County means that its 80-90% high school graduation rate compares with that of the wealthier regions in Northern Virginia.

This map was taken from the Charlotte County Report, which was part of a special supplement to Education Week's Diplomas Count.
This longitudinal study used a formula that combined promotion rates in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 to determine how many 9th-grade students would complete high school "on time," with a regular diploma.
The full study on high-school drop-outs, paid for by the National Governor's Association, Time magazine, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Think, Civic Enterprises, and America's Promise Alliance, may be found online. A report is available for each school district in the nation.
